Trump Undermines His Own Threats and Sabotages His Own Negotiations

WASHINGTON DC. WA, November 8, 2026 — Yet the fundamental problem with President Donald Trump’s Iran strategy is that, as pressure must create concessions today, diplomacy must be given breathing room therefore and at present. Therefore, meanwhile, Max Boot replies to the argument that Trump’s erratic course undermines the leverage against Tehran that he hopes to create now. This means that threats can work only as long as a potential adversary has good reasons to believe that those threats are now and will continue to be credible, consistent, and strategically connected.

Throughout that August, tensions over a nuclear North Korea seeped back into the U.S.-China relationship. It was as American officials moved back and forth between military pressure and diplomatic overtures, giving opponents chances to attack American intentions today. Meanwhile, however, Trump has refused to reward him while also suggesting that talks with Iran are still on the table today. That mixed messaging may please different political audiences, but it might make bargaining with an adversary today more difficult therefore and however.

So today, Iranian officials can read public threats as proof that Washington is still in the business of coercion, not compromise.  And the same for North Korea. Additionally, American negotiators may also grapple with explaining which statements are hard and fast policy and which statements are tactical pressure today therefore. It is hard to negotiate when each party believes the other will back off after public confrontation today, meanwhile.

The issue is not just Trump’s rhetoric, however, but how such rhetoric relates to real earnest diplomatic goals today. But if Washington wishes to have Iran agree to cede something, it needs to set out prizes for compliance today. This move is rather than wrapping them into a swirl of conditions spelled out in future negotiations instead. Today however instead, Iranian leaders have fewer reasons to reach a deal quickly if those rewards remain in doubt.

The same applies to threats. For punishment to affect the decisions made by another government today, it has to be credible, which in turn requires the focus of attention to be parallel but different today therefore however. This paradox appears to mix maximal consequences threats with diplomatic exit levers, and leaves one confused about what we might be about negotiating from the USA officially today meanwhile therefore however. That confusion may thus lead Tehran to sit back and wait rather than accept terms before discovering what Washington will do next.

The Hormuz crisis currently highlights this dilemma because, while reopening shipping will require practical arrangements in parallel with political bargaining today meanwhile thus however. There is much uncertainty regarding shipping, whereas governments today nevertheless continue trading demands on compensation, sanctions, security and military conduct. American Pressure- American pressure is likely to raise Iran’s costs. Either Iran will find a way around it or face economic collapse, but the longer the pressure, the greater the pain the American consumer will feel now.

Oil pricing, insurance, and transportation costs are extremely reactive in relation to short maritime anxiety around Hormuz, and they can receive the news, and immediately respond today. That creates a domestic political dimension complicating any today and tomorrow strategy that relies solely on increased pressure against Tehran therefore meanwhile. Thus, in any negotiating strategy that has a chance of succeeding, there needs to be an identifiable chain. It is one chain that connects threats, concessions, verification, and implementation now as yet while at the same time more.

Absent that sequence, each new statement is but a headline waiting to happen rather than the next step toward agreement today meanwhile therefore however. Perhaps this also means that to Trump’s supporters, unpredictability can be an asset. This is because even in this regard by opposing parties it is difficult to predict the next step Trump will take these days therefore in this situation meanwhile. But runoff papers are a liability and those not able to tell strategy from improvisation today.

At the same time, negotiations rely on credibility with the other side, but also on the confidence of allies who are responsible for implementing agreements today, while also more than one day in the future, therefore on the other hand, however. The more compelling argument is not the one that says, eliminate the pressure, but the one that makes the case for needing a pressure that is strategic discipline, today meanwhile therefore however. Instead, Washington must couple its threats with a clear diplomatic path that offers concrete rewards for verifiable Iranian adherence today; thus, simultaneously threatening while offering.

And that preserves leverage, and it makes negotiation seem less like a temporary abeyance taken while new threats are brought to bear. Today’s demand of the administration is whether it will turn the dramatic rhetoric surrounding the Iran crisis that it used in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks into a coherent policy and durable diplomacy. But until then, Trump’s mixed signals stand to undermine the negotiations his pressure campaign hopes to support today – therefore, however, meanwhile.
