WASHINGTON, July 8, 2026 — Grieving family members, friends, and Southeast Washington residents gathered Tuesday evening for an emotional memorial vigil and balloon release to honour Honesty Cheadle, the 3-year-old girl who was fatally shot exactly one year ago in Washington DC.
The memorial took place as the family continues their public push for structural accountability and judicial justice. The suspected gunman, 24-year-old Charles Rucker, is scheduled to appear in D.C. Superior Court this Friday for a critical pre-trial readiness hearing.
A Bright Light Remembered
The Tuesday night vigil was held on Franklin Street in Northeast D.C.. The vigil saw the sky fill with pink, white, and purple balloons—Honesty’s favourite colours. Loved ones described the toddler as a joyful, affectionate child who loved the cartoon Bluey, playing with her dolls, and spending time with her siblings.
“It feels really good because she’s not forgotten,” Honesty’s aunt told reporters during the gathering. “And that’s the most important thing. We want to continue to have her memory be one that we don’t forget in the District.”
Her mother, Shaunita Ellerbe, who has spoken candidly about her profound grief over the last year, sent a message through family members during the balloon release. “These balloons right here are from your mommy, Honesty,” an aunt called out to the sky. “She said she loves you.”
The Tragedy After the Fireworks
In the early morning hours of July 5, 2025, Honesty and her family had just finished watching a Fourth of July fireworks show and were sitting inside a parked vehicle, when the shooting occurred.
According to reports from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), a gunman approached the vehicle and intentionally fired at least six rounds directly into the car before fleeing on foot. While three other occupants in the vehicle escaped physical injury, Honesty sustained a critical gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to Children’s National Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries on July 7, 2025.
The Legal Battle
Less than a week after the shooting, MPD detectives apprehended Charles Rucker and charged him with first-degree murder. At an initial preliminary hearing, prosecutors introduced surveillance footage showing the suspect firing into the vehicle and subsequently collecting spent shell casings from the pavement.
Pointing to Rucker’s history of prior firearms convictions a D.C. Superior Court judge ordered Rucker be held without bond. Rucker had formally entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment earlier this year. On the upcoming Friday, July the 10th, trial readiness hearing is expected to outline the official timeline for the criminal trial. Which brings the case one step closer to a final verdict.
“My heart has just been lost, broken,” Shaunita Ellerbe stated in an interview shared by WJLA 7News. “All I want is justice for my daughter. No one should ever lose a baby.”
