U.S. Libraries Expand Free Digital Learning Resources for Students and Adults

WASHINGTON DC. WA, October 22, 2026 —  Beginning this Month thousands of public libraries are continually expanding digital learning tools available to patrons totally free. A lot of this growth is backed by new federal resources and continuous grant programs. Librarians say the demand for digital literacy support continues to grow across all age levels. Library technology grant updates published by the Institute of Museum and Library Services examine digital literacy funding and public library program expansion.

A Fresh Source of Digital Literacy from the Fed

Information Literacy was recently published by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. gov, a committed digital literacy resource center. The site provides the countrywide library and museum professional training toolbox. The emphasis is on helping communities manage digital financial and health information. Professional development guidelines published by the American Library Association review digital literacy training tools and library patron support standards.

This resource was first presented at the American Library Association’s annual conference in 2023. It builds on years of federal investment in digital skills programs through library systems. This data could be useful for librarians and museum educators to create programming in their own local area.

Expanding Access Through Grant Funding

IMLS funding aims to assist with access to services such as audiobook and eBook subscription brands. These grants are often the backbone for many public libraries to provide no-cost, on-demand digital content. Historically, that support had done a lot to close gaps in access to those needy communities. Public broadband and digital inclusion reports published by the Federal Communications Commission analyze library internet access initiatives and digital equity programs.

Library-based broadband and digital access initiatives are particularly valuable for rural and remote communities. Computers at library branches are also connected to free broadband, providing internet access in areas that still lack it at home. Many of these programs are the main digital access point for entire communities.

What’s Available for Patrons Today

Digital literacy classes typically now include fundamental engineering skills in addition to a way to use the Internet securely and a manner for newcomers — who come from out of doors nations and experience bewildered with navigating authorities’ offerings — to find it irresistible right. Many libraries provide them with sessions geared toward evaluating information sources and spotting misinformation. These skills have come to be increasingly at the heart of public library programming. Adult education curriculum guides published by the U.S. Department of Education review digital skills instruction and lifelong learning resources.

The book describes the use of library resources, by its users, in various areas such as job searching: resume building and workforce development that are frequently used by adult learners. Free access to tutoring platforms and research databases through various library systems is a huge benefit for students. These tools are generally available to both groups simply by having a library card.

Future of Library Technology Programs

Library administrators are slow to voice concerns about funding uncertainty at the federal level this year. Some library systems have already cut back on certain digital subscription services. Trade groups are still pushing for steady, ongoing federal funding for library technology advances.

Despite that uncertainty, many library systems are still going ahead with expanding their digital offerings through state and local partnerships. The community demand for these services is still across most of the urban and rural areas Digital literacy training will probably not become a taboo area for library leaders.

Most public libraries have some kind of digital orientation sessions to get people started who are unsure where to begin. Walk-through new users through account setup and possible resources (staff can do this). With that said, even as library technology evolves to keep pace, such guidance is still one of the most important functions libraries perform in service of their communities.

Older adults are among those becoming most in-demand for digital literacy assistance at local libraries. Several are looking for advice on how to keep up with online banking, telehealth appointments or video calls with family. One-on-one teaching can make a real difference for this group — with librarians saying the key is patience.

From kids programming to coding classes now — or even rookie digital citizenship facts. These concepts introduced early are an opportunity to get comfortable with technology prior to students entering the classroom. Many library systems now have maker spaces dedicated to these types of basic coding and design tools.

In recent years partnerships with local school districts have intensified as library resources are more closely tied to classroom needs. In some libraries, homework help during after-school hours is offered with the assistance of trained volunteers. By working with people outside of schools, their role expands barren resources at district levels to include the wider community.

Advocates for libraries continue to advocate for greater awareness by the public of these free digital offerings. There is a perception from many patrons however that there are tools available, they just may not know the extent of what they could get access to through their local library. But increasing outreach, advocates say, could significantly boost utilization of resources that are available.
